High West Whiskey Tasting June 25th

Join us and our friend and spirits specialist Gerry Flanagan from Breakthru Beverage for a sampling of High West Whiskey's highly rated Bourbons, Ryes and Blends.  Gerry will be on site from 6PM until 7:30PM on Saturday June 25th.  You will sample their Double Rye, American Prarie blended Bourbon, Rendezvous Rye and Campfire Scotch-Rye-Bourbon blend. The tasting is just $12.  You can enjoy it in the bar or in the dining room and reservations are not required.  These whiskeys are unique so we hope you will give them a try!

Ipswich Whole Belly Clams At Madfish Grill!

I’m writing this blog in advance of an up-coming menu change that will affect our customers who dine with us to eat whole belly clams.  Due to the rising cost of whole bellies and our desire to only offer the finest quality clams,  we will only be ordering them once a week.  They will be available Thursday until we run out.  For the first few weeks after this menu adjustment, we will continue to have them available all week, until we get everyone in the loop!

Some of the challenges that face the fishermen who harvest the clams are temperature and weather where they may simply not be available. 

What other restaurants in Sarasota offer whole belly clams?  Honestly, searching the internet we found only ourselves.  Funny that such a desirable item for all out North East transplants isn't more readily available.

What is the difference between a Ipswich whole belly and a regular old clam?  Ipswich clams are soft shell clams are eaten steamed in the shell, deep fried or occasionally sautéed.  Hard shell clams are from a different scientific classification order and are just completely different in taste and texture.  Hard clams are eaten many ways – raw, sautéed, steamed, fried or in soups.  Hard shell clams are found in New England Clam Chowder and large hard shell clams are processed for clam strips.

 

As for the size of the whole belly clams we sell, we do not have any control over that unfortunately.  In the current market conditions, we are lucky to get them at all!  As an average, they are 1 ½ - 2 inches in length but sometimes they are small and sometimes they are jumbo.  Different folks like them different sizes and we try to alert guests ordering them when they are jumbo because there is a lot of belly going on there!

At different times of the year, we offer featured menus.  In the spring, we off a tapas tasting style menu.  At the end of summer we feature a lobster-centric menu, this year we expanded it to include more seafood .  We always have a gluten free menu available and we try and highlight our featured menus to alert our gluten intolerant guests to those features.  We are a quick drive from Lakewood Ranch or Palmer Ranch and are open seven days a week for lunch and dinner with a great Sunday Brunch served a la carte from 10AM til 2 PM Sundays with $1.99 Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas.
