Madfish Grill was opened in April
1999 as a sister restaurant to Sarasota's well-known Hillview
Grill. Owner Miles and Mindy Millwee established Hillview Grill
in 1988.
The Millwees and the Hillview team saw an opportunity
to open a restaurant on the east side of Sarasota, featuring an
island inspired menu and decor in a casual atmosphere.

The
Madfish concept was inspired by the highly successful cuisine
created at the Hillview Grill, which has always focused on the
cultural cuisines of the coastal areas of Florida and the Gulf
of Mexico, as well as those of the Caribbean Islands.
Our Chefs take care in selecting the finest quality meats, the freshest
fish and seafood and produce...creatively preparing these for
you, our customer. We have built on our reputation of consistent,
quality food and professional, friendly wait staff from the
beginning.
Inspiration for the
Madfish name and logo came from a "mola" that we have
treasured for many years. Molas are original, hand embroidered
pieces created by the Kuna Indians of Panama. The Kuna Indians
reside in the San Blas Islands and lead a simple, primitive
life. The Kuna women hand stitch and embroider the molas from
scraps of bright, colorful cloth with scenes depicting their
lifestyle. Typically, molas are of sea creatures and scenes, as
the livelihood of these people primarily comes from the sea. Our
Madfish mola is the brightly colored fish that serves as our
logo.
